Sophie Baxter, a 31-year-old from Hull, has always considered herself alternative. She started a social group called Never a Phase for people who identify as emos, goths, or moshers. Sophie believes that being alternative is not just a phase or a way to rebel, but a lifestyle and a way to express who you are. She found it difficult to meet people who shared her interests in regular work environments, so she created the group to help people find friends who understand them and allow them to be their true selves. The group meets regularly in Hull and has grown to over 2,000 followers on Instagram.
For many, the emo phase was something they went through as teenagers, wearing black clothes, getting piercings, and listening to bands like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, and Panic at the Disco. While some people moved on from this style, others, like Sophie, never did. She says that as people grow up, they often feel pressure to fit in at work or in society, which can make them hide their true selves. However, she believes that the desire to be alternative never really goes away. As people reach their late twenties or early thirties, they often realize that it's okay to be different and to embrace their unique style and interests.
Never a Phase organizes a variety of activities, including picnics, museum visits, and a book club. The alternative scene in Hull is also supported by events like Panic at the Emo! night at the Polar Bear Music Club. Daniel Mawer, who runs the club, says that these events are some of his favorites because the people who attend are friendly, welcoming, and open to making new friends. He has noticed that a new generation of teenagers is embracing the emo fashion and music that was popular in the early 2000s. Bands like My Chemical Romance and Paramore continue to attract large crowds, showing that the genre is still alive and reaching new fans. Sophie believes that her group helps people feel like they belong, no matter their appearance or musical taste. She says that being alternative is about having the right mindset and being comfortable with who you are, and that everyone is welcome in her group if they share that attitude.
