A bright blue canal narrowboat with yellow circles and a red and orange hull is making its way through the West Midlands, but this is no ordinary boat. Called Slow Boat 2026, it has been transformed into a floating art studio by the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham. Over the next several months, the boat will travel 150 miles along the region's canal network, stopping in cities and towns like Birmingham, the Black Country, and Coventry. The project is designed to give young people a chance to get involved in art, learn new skills, and connect with their local communities.
The Slow Boat is more than just a place to make art. It is a creative space where young people can experiment with different forms of art, including drawing, painting, sculpture, sound, film, and digital media. There are also nature-based projects and opportunities to work with local artists. The workshops are free for young people and are designed by members of Ikon's youth programme. Each stop on the boat's journey has a special theme that connects to the history and culture of the area. For example, in Wolverhampton, the workshops will focus on the city's craft and design traditions, while in Stourbridge, the focus will be on the region's history of glassmaking.
Lucy Grubb, who coordinates the Ikon Young Project, says that Slow Boat is a place where young people's voices can be heard and where they can try new things. She believes that when young people are trusted and supported, they can do amazing things. The boat will stop in Wolverhampton from 1 April to 1 May, Tipton from 11 to 24 May, Stourbridge from 1 to 13 June, Halesowen from 22 June to 4 July, Smethwick from 11 to 19 July, Birmingham from 27 July to 30 August, and Coventry from 7 to 26 September. Each stop will have its own set of workshops and events, all designed to help young people explore their creativity and learn about their local area.
The Slow Boat project is a unique way to bring art to young people who might not have access to traditional art spaces. It encourages them to think about their own stories and the history of the places where they live. By working together with local artists and community groups, the project helps build connections and inspire new ideas. Whether you are interested in painting, sculpture, or digital media, there is something for everyone on the Slow Boat. If you live in the West Midlands, keep an eye out for the colourful boat on the canals and join in the creative journey.
