This decision comes as the company is facing an investigation into a troubling situation where 80 deaths may be linked to some of its products. The company has stated that this move is intended to clarify executive responsibility regarding the issues surrounding their beni kōji fermented rice products. Earlier this year, in March, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical had to recall five of its products after receiving reports from customers about kidney problems. The investigation began when a doctor informed the company about health issues that were reported back in January. To assist customers who might be affected, the company established a hotline where individuals could seek advice and support. Customers who reported health issues mentioned experiencing symptoms such as changes in urine color, swelling in their limbs, and extreme fatigue. Following these reports, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical discovered a potentially harmful acid produced by mold at one of its manufacturing facilities. In a separate statement, the company's board of directors expressed their condolences for the families of those who passed away and stated that they would pray for the deceased. They also issued a heartfelt apology to their customers and business partners for the distress caused by this situation. The company has appointed Satoshi Yamane, who previously led sustainability policies, as the new president. Akihiro Kobayashi, who has expressed a desire to take responsibility for the harm caused to customers, will remain with the company to manage compensation arrangements. Beni kōji is a rice product that is fermented using a reddish-purple mold known as monascus purpureus. While it is marketed as a health supplement to help with high cholesterol and blood pressure, it is also commonly used as a natural dye in various food products.
