The Diaspora Festival is a grassroots arts event that takes place in Bristol and nearby areas like Somerset, Devon, and Cornwall. This year, the festival was bigger than ever, with more than 200 artists performing in over 100 events during a 10-day celebration. The festival is organized by Diverse Artists Networks and is supported by the Arts Council. The main goal of the festival is to celebrate the many different cultures that make up the community and to help people feel like they belong, especially during times when the world feels divided. Vandna Mehta, the artistic director, said that the festival has a ripple effect, spreading positivity and a sense of belonging throughout the city and beyond. She believes that the festival is more important than ever because it is built on love and trust, and it helps people connect with each other.

A diaspora is a group of people who have moved away from their original homeland but still keep their traditions and cultural ties. The Diaspora Festival welcomes everyone, no matter where they come from. Vandna Mehta explained that Bristol is a city shaped by immigration, and the festival brings together music, dance, art, and food from many different backgrounds. One of the highlights was the Spirit of SWANA event, which celebrated cultures from Southwest Asia and North Africa. This event included dance performances, percussion music, craft workshops, and delicious food. Engy Elboreini, who helped organize the event, said it was beautiful to come together and celebrate not only your own culture but also the cultures of others. She believes that creating a sense of belonging is very important, and that celebrating the arts is one of the best ways to fight against division and polarization.

Another important part of the festival was the Voices of the Diaspora art exhibition, curated by Emma Allen. This exhibition featured 18 artists from Bristol with roots in different parts of the world. The art explored themes like identity, home, and folk stories. Emma Allen said that this year, with the political climate being so divisive, it was especially meaningful to see people from different backgrounds sitting together and sharing their stories. She believes that Bristol is a city full of different cultures, and that diversity should be celebrated. Other events included a Baisakhi celebration, which is a harvest festival from South Asia, and a film screening by Louise Ndibwirende. Louise showed her film Rice at Home, which tells the stories of women from Rwanda, Bangladesh, and India. She said it was inspiring to share these stories and that people connected with them, even if they were not from those cultures. The festival ended with a lively closing ceremony, where everyone danced and enjoyed music together. The Diaspora Festival shows how important it is to celebrate diversity and bring people together through the arts.
