Hidden in the Atacama Desert of Chile is a remarkable building called the Residencia. From the outside, it is almost invisible, blending perfectly with the rocky desert and mountains. The entrance is behind a heavy, plain door at the end of a ramp, making it look mysterious. But once you step inside, you find a green oasis. The air is moist and cool, thanks to the many tropical plants and trees growing in the central atrium. There is a large blue swimming pool under a glass dome, making the place feel like a secret paradise in the middle of the desert.

The Residencia is famous for being used in the James Bond movie Quantum of Solace. In 2008, the film crew shot the final scenes here, using the building’s unique design for dramatic action. However, the Residencia is not a hotel for tourists or movie stars. It is a special place for astronomers and engineers who work at the nearby observatories, like the Very Large Telescope on Cerro Paranal. The European Southern Observatory owns the Residencia, and it was built to help scientists live and work in one of the world’s driest and most extreme places.

Life at the Residencia is surprisingly comfortable. There is plenty of food, and people can relax in the pool or garden. However, alcohol is not allowed because the high altitude and dry air can make people sick. The building is more than 2,000 meters above sea level, and the air outside is very dry, so visitors are warned to be careful. The scientists work in shifts, with some working during the day and others at night. The building is designed to keep out light, which is important because even a small amount of light can affect the telescopes. At night, the sky is incredibly dark and full of stars. Sometimes, you can see satellites moving across the sky and even other galaxies with your eyes. When you leave the Residencia, you feel like you have been part of something special, seeing the universe in a way that few people ever do.
