Across the United Kingdom, people have been dealing with very wet winters and frequent flooding. From Cornwall in the southwest to County Down in Northern Ireland, January was the wettest on record, and the heavy rain continued into February. The main reason for this is a blocked weather pattern, where high pressure over Scandinavia is stopping the rain from moving away. The Met Office says that, because of global warming, winters as wet as 2023 and 2024 used to happen only once every 80 years, but now they happen about once every 20 years. If the planet keeps getting warmer, these wet winters could become even more common. This could cause big problems for homes, transportation, and food supplies.

Farmers are especially worried. One farmer in Somerset told the BBC that his crops were close to rotting in the floodwater. In some places, cars were abandoned in flooded roads, and people struggled to get around. More than 100 locations had flood warnings, and over 300 homes were already flooded, according to the Environment Agency. The Met Office says that six of the ten wettest winters in the last 250 years have happened since the year 2000. The UK’s weather is naturally changeable, but the trend is for wetter winters, which matches what scientists predicted. Burning fossil fuels like coal and oil has released greenhouse gases, warming the planet. For every one degree Celsius the temperature rises, the air can hold 7 percent more moisture, which leads to heavier rainfall. At the same time, sea levels around the UK are rising because the oceans are getting warmer and glaciers are melting. Since 1901, sea levels have gone up by 20 centimeters, which makes coastal flooding worse, especially during storms.

Right now, the UK has about seven days a year with more than 80 millimeters of rain, which is considered a heavy rainfall event. If the world gets more than two degrees warmer, this could increase to nine days a year. Even with current efforts to reduce pollution, the United Nations expects global temperatures to rise by at least 2. 5 degrees by the end of the century. This means more intense and frequent rainfall, and more rain falling in a short time, which can cause flash floods. Professor Lizzie Kendon from the Met Office explained that when heavy rain happens again and again, the ground becomes saturated and flooding gets worse.

The damage from wetter winters can be serious. Heavy rain and soaked ground can ruin homes, roads, and farms. The Environment Agency estimates that by 2050, one in four properties could be at risk of flooding, especially in the East Midlands, Yorkshire, and southeast England. This risk will go up if more homes are built on floodplains. The government plans to build 1. 5 million homes, and some will be in areas that flood easily. Railways are also at risk, with a third already threatened by flooding, and this could rise to more than half in the next 25 years. Farmers are struggling, too. The National Farmers Union wrote to Members of Parliament to warn about the risks. The wet winter of 2024 caused about one billion pounds in losses for farmers. James Winslade, a farmer in Somerset, said more than 90 percent of his land was underwater, and he could lose his crops. He said his family had farmed for three generations, but they had never seen flooding like this.

The UK has many flood defences, but not all are in good condition. The Environment Agency looks after about half of them, but 9 percent are below their target condition. Defences not managed by the Agency are even more likely to be in poor shape. Building more homes and car parks makes flooding worse because rain cannot soak into the ground and instead runs off into drains and rivers, which can overflow. The Environment Agency says that, because of climate change, more flooding and extreme weather are likely. They are working to help communities adapt and plan to invest more money to protect homes in the future.
