Norman Guy was a beloved figure in the village of Muker, North Yorkshire, and his story is one that touched many lives. Norman joined the Muker Silver Band in 1952 when he was just 12 years old, feeling left out after his brothers became members. Over the next 70 years, Norman dedicated himself to the band, playing several instruments, composing music, and eventually becoming the conductor. He was known for his quiet nature and his willingness to help everyone, whether they were new to the band or experienced musicians. Norman was also deeply involved in the community, serving as a church warden, working at the local pub, and painting landscapes of the area.
Recently, hundreds of people gathered in a large marquee in Muker to pay tribute to Norman. The event featured about 50 musicians from 12 different bands, all of whom had played with Muker Silver Band over the years. The concert included many of Norman's own compositions and arrangements, with one special solo written for his grandson, Phil Guy, to perform on the trombone. Phil, now a brass teacher and conductor in Scotland, spoke about how his grandfather inspired him to pursue music. He said that Norman's encouragement and guidance were the reasons he became a musician, and that many others in the band felt the same way. Phil described the experience of performing at the tribute concert as overwhelming, seeing so many people gathered to honor his grandad.
The concert also had a charitable purpose, raising more than £4,550 for the Stroke Association and the ME Association. These charities were chosen because of Norman's grandchildren. Phil suffered a stroke as a child, and his sister Jazz was diagnosed with ME, a chronic illness that forced her to stop playing in the band. Jazz now serves as the band treasurer and shared how much her grandparents wished they could take away her illness. Norman passed away last year, just as he was planning music for the village's Harvest Festival. His family said he would be proud to see the ME Association benefit from the concert. Norman's son Allan has taken over as conductor and feels honored to continue his father's legacy. The event brought together people from all over the region, showing just how much Norman meant to the community and the world of brass band music.
