NASA is preparing for its first crewed Moon mission in over 50 years, called Artemis II. The mission could launch as early as the first week of February. On Saturday, NASA will move its huge Space Launch System rocket and the Orion Space Capsule from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the launch pad. This four-mile journey will take up to 12 hours. Once the rocket is at the pad, engineers will connect all the necessary equipment, like electrical lines and fuel systems. At the end of January, NASA will do a 'wet dress rehearsal,' which is a test where they fill the rocket with fuel to make sure everything works. If there are any problems, the rocket might have to go back to the building for repairs. If everything is ready, the earliest launch date is Friday, February 6. The Moon also needs to be in the right position, so NASA has chosen several possible launch dates in February, March, and April.

The Artemis II crew includes four astronauts: Reid Wiseman, who is the commander; Victor Glover, the pilot; Christina Koch, a mission specialist; and Jeremy Hansen, another mission specialist from the Canadian Space Agency. This will be the first time astronauts fly on the SLS rocket and Orion capsule. After launch, the crew will orbit Earth and practice flying the spacecraft. Then, they will travel thousands of kilometers beyond the Moon to test Orion's systems, like life support, power, and navigation. The astronauts will also act as medical test subjects, sending back data about how their bodies react to deep space. They will live in a small cabin with no gravity and higher radiation than on the International Space Station, but it will still be safe. When they return to Earth, their capsule will splash down in the Pacific Ocean.

Artemis II will not land on the Moon. Its main goal is to prepare for Artemis III, which will try to land astronauts on the lunar surface. NASA hopes to launch Artemis III in 2027 or 2028, but the exact date depends on when the lander and new spacesuits are ready. The lander could be made by SpaceX or Blue Origin. When Artemis III happens, astronauts will go to the Moon's south pole. After that, NASA plans to build a small space station called Gateway around the Moon and send more astronauts and robots. Other countries, like Europe, Japan, China, Russia, and India, also want to send people to the Moon in the future. The last time astronauts went to the Moon was in 1972, during the Apollo missions. Now, with Artemis, NASA and its partners hope to explore the Moon for longer and with more advanced technology.
