India is facing a big problem with water scarcity, especially as the climate changes and modern water systems are not always enough. In many parts of the country, people are turning to ancient water structures that were built hundreds or even thousands of years ago. Stepwells are large tanks with steps leading down to the water, and they were designed to collect rainwater and let it soak into the ground. This helps keep the water table high, so wells and handpumps nearby have water even during dry months.
Other traditional structures are also being brought back. Johads are simple dams made of earth that hold rainwater long enough for it to soak into the ground. In Alwar, the network of johads had collapsed during British rule, and people started using borewells instead. But this took out more water than was replaced, and soon the area was declared a ‘dark zone’ because the groundwater was so low. In 1985, a man named Rajendra Singh started building johads again in Gopalpura village. After just one monsoon, the wells filled up, and other villages wanted to do the same. Over the next 20 years, thousands of johads were built, bringing rivers back to life and helping hundreds of villages.
In other parts of India, like Marathwada, people are also restoring old water systems. The land there is made of hard rock, so it’s important to catch rainwater before it runs off. By building or fixing thousands of small dams and tanks, villages have been able to keep their wells full. These traditional methods are often cheaper and more effective than modern solutions like borewells or canals, which can take water out but don’t help put it back.
After India became independent, the government focused on building big dams and canals to bring water to people. But not much was done to recharge the groundwater. Now, the government is supporting the restoration of traditional water systems as part of its plan to make sure every village has enough water. People like Varsha, a woman from a village that built a johad, say that these old methods are very important. She used to worry about her well running dry, but now it has water all year. She believes that regular cleaning and building more structures will help everyone.
Experts say that the knowledge of how to build and use these systems was never really lost in villages. What was missing was the support from the government and the community. Now, with more people working together and caring for these ancient structures, India is finding new hope in old solutions. The revival of these water systems shows that sometimes, the best answers to modern problems can be found in the past.
