The Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust has announced a new plan that is considered essential for protecting the future of its museums and historic sites. Karen Davis, the interim chief executive officer, explained that the trust has faced significant challenges over the past five years, especially with visitor numbers dropping and not returning to the levels seen before the Covid pandemic. Before the pandemic, the museums welcomed around 450,000 visitors each year, but last year, that number fell to just under 300,000. Davis said that for the museums to be sustainable, they need to attract at least 500,000 visitors annually.
Ironbridge Gorge is famous for being the birthplace of the industrial revolution. One of its main attractions is the original blast furnace where Abraham Darby I improved the process of iron smelting. His innovations, along with those of other 'iron masters,' played a key role in building bridges, railways, and machinery that shaped the modern world. The museums in Ironbridge tell the story of these achievements and the history of the industrial revolution. Since 1967, the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust has been responsible for preserving this heritage.
To address the decline in visitors, the trust reached out to various organizations for support. The National Trust has now stepped in, aiming to increase annual visitor numbers to 600,000 in the long term. Davis expressed gratitude that the National Trust recognizes the unique value of Ironbridge, saying that the stories told at these museums cannot be found anywhere else. The government is also supporting the effort by providing £9 million, which will allow the National Trust to invest in all the sites and make them more engaging for visitors. There will be no immediate changes to jobs, and all current employees will transfer to the National Trust when the takeover is completed in the spring. The Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust will be wound up in mid-2026, but with this new plan, the future of the museums and their historic assets appears much more secure.
