Glow worms are fascinating insects that light up the night with their glowing bodies. Even though they are called glow worms, they are actually a type of beetle. In East Sussex, at Benfield Hill Nature Reserve near Hove, these insects can be seen shining in the dark. As the sun sets and the sky turns dark, small green lights begin to appear in the chalk grasslands. These lights are made by the glow worms, and the reserve is known as one of the best places in Sussex to see them. During the summer breeding season, conservationists have counted as many as 60 glowing female glow worms in a single evening. Volunteers work hard to manage the grasslands so that glow worms have a safe place to live and breed.
Glow worms are facing many threats across the country. Their numbers are going down because they are losing their habitats, the climate is changing, and there is too much artificial light at night. Sally Wadsworth, who leads the Benfield Wildlife and Conservation Group, explains that they leave some areas of grass longer so that female glow worms can climb up and show their glowing lights to attract males. She says, 'We're trying different techniques and I think it is working because we've got such a good population here. ' On a windy summer evening, Sally goes out to the reserve to look for glow worms. She describes how the females stick their bottoms in the air and turn on a green light, which is called bioluminescence. 'You can see little green stars all dotted around,' she says.
Female glow worms only glow for a short time in June and July. Every summer, they put on a beautiful display by shining a bright green light to attract males. This amazing sight has fascinated people for hundreds of years. However, if there is too much light pollution from streetlights and buildings, the male glow worms cannot see the females and may not be able to find them to mate. Sally says that seeing a glow worm is always a magical experience. It is very important to protect the places where glow worms live because they do not travel far. While male glow worms can fly, the females do not have wings and usually stay close to where they were born. If glow worms disappear from an area, they will not come back unless people help by reintroducing them.
Earlier this year, volunteers and rangers from the South Downs National Park released 250 glow worm larvae at a site near Alton in Hampshire. The larvae were brought from Devon with the help of experts, and the hope is that they will survive and create a new population. Jan Knowlson, a biodiversity officer for the South Downs National Park, says, 'It's a bit of an experiment. We don't know quite what's going to happen, but hopefully they'll survive and thrive and we'll have lots of little glow worms in the future. ' Across Europe, five species of glow worm are at risk of extinction, and the common glow worm is considered near threatened. The Wildlife Trust says that the UK has lost more than 80% of its chalk grasslands since World War Two, which is a habitat that glow worms need. Artificial light is also believed to have a big impact on glow worm populations.
The South Downs National Park is one of the best places in the region for glow worms because it has some of the darkest skies in the country. This year marks the park being named an International Dark Sky Reserve, and protecting these dark areas has become a key part of conservation work. Jan Knowlson says that keeping the sky dark is very important for glow worms, especially during the summer when adult females have only one job: to breed and lay eggs before they die. If there is too much light pollution, it can disrupt this important part of their life cycle. The National Park Authority has made it a priority to increase the amount of dark sky areas in its five-year plan, with the goal of expanding the darkest core areas by 10% by 2031. By protecting these dark places, people hope to help glow worms and other wildlife survive for many years to come.
