Kevin Ramsey, a 48-year-old man from Haverhill in Suffolk, has been blind for many years. He relies on his guide dog to help him get around and volunteers with Suffolk Sight, a charity that supports people with vision loss. Recently, Kevin was introduced to a new piece of technology called smart glasses, made by Meta. These glasses are designed to help people who are blind or have low vision by reading text out loud and helping them navigate places. After trying them out during a demonstration by Suffolk Sight, Kevin decided to buy a pair for himself. He says that these smart glasses have completely changed his life and made everyday tasks much easier.
With the smart glasses, Kevin can do things that used to be very difficult for him. For example, when he goes to a restaurant, the glasses can read the menu out loud so he knows what is available to order. When he goes shopping, he can pick up a product and ask the glasses what it is, and they will tell him. The glasses can even read use-by dates on food and drink, which helps Kevin stay safe and organized at home. He also uses an app called VoiceVista, which works with the glasses to help him track his walking routes. If he ever gets lost, he can ask the glasses what is around him, and they will describe his surroundings. This gives Kevin more confidence and independence when he is out and about.
Kevin says that before he had the smart glasses, he had to use his phone for everything, which was not always easy or safe. Now, he can keep his phone in his pocket and use the glasses instead. The glasses cost between 200 and 400 pounds, but Kevin believes they are worth the price because of how much they help him. He thinks that smart glasses could make a big difference for many people who are visually impaired. However, Kevin is also aware that some people are worried about privacy issues with smart glasses. There have been reports of people using the glasses to record others without their permission. Because of this, some places like courts, restaurants, and theaters have banned smart glasses. Kevin is concerned that more places might do the same, which could make life harder for people who need the glasses. He hopes that people will use the technology responsibly so that everyone can benefit from it.
