Corfe Castle, located in Dorset in the south of England, is a historic site that dates back to the 11th century. Over the years, the castle has faced many challenges from the weather and the effects of climate change. To make sure the castle is safe for future generations, a major conservation project was started. This project, which cost two million pounds and took three years to complete, was the largest effort to protect Corfe Castle since the 1950s. The National Trust, which manages the castle, led the work.

The conservation team had a lot to do. They repaired damaged stonework, made the walls stronger, and even explored a possible secret entrance that might have been used during the English Civil War. While working, they discovered marks left by medieval stonemasons, such as tally marks to count their work and guide marks around arrow slits. The weather has been a big problem for the castle. Hot, dry summers dry out the mortar between the stones, while warmer and wetter winters help plants grow in the walls. These plants can loosen the stones and make the walls weaker.

To protect the castle, the team used a method called soft capping, which involves covering vulnerable areas with grass to shield them from rain and plant growth. They also had to fix a fallen guard tower, which was a difficult job because the stones were very heavy. Special equipment was used to lift and reset stones that weighed up to 90 kilograms. Visitors to the castle helped raise money for the project by buying pin badges, second-hand books, and tickets to a special viewing platform called King's View. This platform allowed people to see parts of the castle that had not been open to the public for over 350 years. The National Trust says they will continue to care for Corfe Castle, making sure it stays safe and strong for many years to come.
