The Dutch agencies said that government officials, military staff, and civil servants were among those targeted in this global campaign.

Signal has assured users that its systems have not been compromised and remain secure. However, the company is taking these reports very seriously and is encouraging users to be extra careful. The attacks are known as phishing campaigns, where criminals try to convince people to share their passcodes, money, or personal details by pretending to be someone trustworthy. In this case, the hackers pretended to be Signal Support and asked users for their account details. Signal reminds everyone that they should never share their PIN code or any verification codes with anyone, even if the person claims to be from Signal. WhatsApp has also given similar advice, telling users not to share their six-digit codes and to block unknown messages or calls.

Cybersecurity experts say that while Signal and WhatsApp use end-to-end encryption to protect messages, this does not help if someone else gets access to your account through phishing. Features like QR codes for logging in on other devices or text verification codes can be used by hackers if users are not careful. Experts recommend regularly checking which devices are linked to your account and removing any that you do not recognize. They also warn that even though these apps are secure, they should not be used to share highly sensitive or classified information. The Dutch intelligence agencies believe that Signal was targeted because it is trusted by people who need secure communication, but this also makes it attractive to hackers looking for valuable information.
