Dr Emily Broadwell, a scientist from the University of Bristol, recently completed a three-month research mission to Signy Island in Antarctica. After returning to the UK, Emily took the algae samples to her lab at the University of Bristol's Cabot Institute for the Environment. She studied the DNA of the algae and compared them to samples from the Arctic and the Alps. Her research showed that the algae on Signy Island are very diverse and that some types are rarely seen anywhere else. This means that as the climate gets warmer, the algae in Antarctica might not change in the same way as those in other places. Emily's work is important because it helps scientists understand how life in cold environments might be affected by global warming. Her colleague, Dr Chris Williamson, said that there is still much more to learn about these tiny organisms and their role in the ecosystem.
