Four original illustrations by Axel Scheffler, the well-known artist behind The Gruffalo, are set to be auctioned to raise funds for children’s books. Scheffler donated these colorful drawings after attending the tenth anniversary of the Jersey Festival of Words in September. The festival, which celebrates literature and storytelling, marked its most successful year yet, with a record number of books given to children who attended. The auction will be held through Bailiwick Auctions, with bidding open from December 8 to December 15. The money raised will be used to buy books for children from families who may not be able to afford them.
The organizers of the Jersey Festival of Words believe that providing books to children is more important than ever. Many families struggle to buy books, and the festival aims to make sure that every child has the chance to read and enjoy stories. This year, the festival gave away more books than ever before, especially to children who attended multi-lingual storytelling sessions at Millennium Park. These sessions were designed for nursery-age children and featured stories in different languages, making the event inclusive for families from various backgrounds. The festival also collected and distributed donated second-hand books, ensuring that as many children as possible could take home a book of their own.
Lucy Cotter, the chairwoman of the festival, said that being able to give books to children who might not otherwise have them is one of the most meaningful parts of their work. She expressed her gratitude for Axel Scheffler’s support, saying that his beautiful illustrations will help the festival reach even more children. Cotter is excited to see the positive impact that the funds from the auction will have. The festival’s success this year has inspired the organizers to continue their efforts to bring books and stories to children in the community. They hope that with the help of supporters like Scheffler, they can keep making a difference in the lives of young readers.
The Jersey Festival of Words is not just about giving away books; it is also about creating a love of reading and storytelling. The festival features a variety of activities, including author visits, storytelling sessions, and workshops. These events encourage children to use their imagination and develop a lifelong love of books. The organizers believe that reading is essential for learning and personal growth, and they are committed to making books accessible to all children. With the support of artists like Axel Scheffler and the generosity of the community, the festival hopes to continue its mission for many years to come.
