A new and unique sculpture called the 'Penleigh Queen Bee' is being created for Penleigh Park in Westbury, Wiltshire. The artist behind this project is Brendon Murless from Bridport, Dorset. His design was chosen from a competition that looked for a nature-inspired statue to be placed in the park. The sculpture will stand about seven feet tall and will be made from clay, steel, and logs. It will sit on a sturdy oak plinth and feature a woman's face looking up with a calm expression. What makes this artwork truly special is that it is designed to help bees. Inside the back of the Queen Bee's head, there will be a stack of mixed logs and stones. Holes will be drilled into these materials to create homes for different types of bees, especially solitary bees and masonry bees. These bees do not live in hives like honeybees but need safe places to nest. The artist hopes that the sculpture will not only be a beautiful addition to the park but also a helpful one for the local bee population.
Bees are very important for the environment because they are pollinators. This means they help plants and flowers grow by spreading pollen. However, wild bee populations are declining all over the world. This is a serious problem because it affects nature and our food supply. Without enough bees, many plants would not be able to produce fruits and seeds. Brendon Murless wants his sculpture to make people think about the importance of bees and how humans are connected to them. He says that in folklore, bees are often seen as symbols of family, protection, and teamwork. These ideas fit well with the community spirit of the project. The sculpture is meant to create a peaceful moment for visitors to the park and inspire them to reflect on the wonders of bees.
The project is a team effort between Westbury Town Council, Penleigh residents, and local schoolchildren. Wiltshire Council also provided extra funding to help make the sculpture possible. Benjamin Griffiths, the business development manager at the Town Council, said that the sculpture will be an incredible addition to Penleigh Park. He praised the hard work of everyone involved. Ella-mai Robey, the public art officer for Wiltshire Council, said that the idea for the sculpture came from local people and that it is exciting to use public art to improve the community. The 'Penleigh Queen Bee' will soon be installed in the park, where it will serve as both a work of art and a home for bees. This project shows how art can be used to support nature and bring people together. Visitors to Penleigh Park will be able to enjoy the sculpture and learn more about the important role bees play in our world.
