Skyrora, a Scottish rocket company based in Edinburgh, has made history by becoming the first UK-based firm to receive a space launch licence. The licence allows Skyrora to launch and operate its suborbital rocket, called Skylark L, from the spaceport. The company hopes to launch this rocket up to 16 times a year by 2030. The Skylark L is an impressive piece of technology, standing 11 meters tall and built using 3D-printed parts made in the UK. It is capable of reaching speeds up to 3. 5 times the speed of sound and can travel as high as 310 miles above the Earth. This means the rocket will go into space and then return to Earth, making it useful for scientific experiments that need to be done in microgravity, where there is very little gravity. Skyrora says that using their rocket for these experiments will be less expensive than using larger rockets that go into orbit.

Rob Bishton, the chief executive of the CAA, said that giving Skyrora the licence is a major step forward for the UK’s space industry. The SaxaVord Spaceport was once an RAF radar station, but now it is being transformed into a hub for space launches.
