These witnesses described how Kurashov called for the Ukrainians to surrender, after which Hodniuk emerged unarmed and was then shot. Kurashov initially pleaded not guilty but later changed his plea to guilty in court, though he claimed this was to speed up the process rather than admit guilt. The United Nations has reported a worrying increase in battlefield executions by Russian forces, with evidence of at least 79 such killings since August 2024. The trial is taking place in a local court in Zaporizhzhia, as Ukraine currently has no specialized war crimes courts. The prosecution has gathered over 2,000 pages of evidence, relying heavily on the testimony of Russian prisoners of war. Despite the challenges of investigating crimes in an active war zone, Ukrainian authorities have worked hard to build a strong case. Kurashov's background is also part of the story. Orphaned at birth and having spent years in prison, he was recruited by the Russian military from a penal colony with the promise of a fresh start if he joined the war. His unit, known as 'Storm-V,' was made up mostly of freed prisoners and was sent to some of the most dangerous parts of the frontline. The soldiers were reportedly told not to take prisoners, a direct violation of international law. Kurashov described the unit as poorly trained and demoralized, with many soldiers expecting to die. The trial raises important questions about responsibility and justice in war. If found guilty, Kurashov faces life in prison in Ukraine. The case also highlights the broader issue of war crimes committed during the conflict and the difficulties in holding perpetrators accountable.
