They shared that, while they were encouraged to dream, it often felt like they shouldn’t dream too high—a feeling they believe is common among young people in Scotland. Despite their achievements, Jacob’s path to music was not straightforward. After a challenging time at university and a difficult period living in London, they returned to Scotland, performing in Edinburgh’s folk music scene and even living out of a van. These early struggles helped shape Jacob’s intimate and confessional musical style, which soon caught the attention of BBC Introducing in Scotland. Their unique sound earned them a live slot at Tenement Trail in Glasgow, and in 2024, they performed at BBC Introducing’s national showcase in London. The past year has been a breakthrough for Jacob. They released their debut album, In Limerence, performed on the popular TV show Later… with Jools Holland, played the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury, and received a Mercury Prize nomination for Album of the Year. Jacob was also named one of BBC Radio 6 Music’s Artists of the Year, solidifying their reputation as one of the UK’s most distinctive new voices. Reflecting on their win, Jacob said they are proud to be the first Scottish artist to receive the award and feel privileged to represent Scotland.
