A devastating wildfire in southern Cyprus has left a family with nothing after their home was destroyed. Ben Armstrong, his wife Lucy, and their three-year-old son Ethan had to flee their house in Souni, Limassol, as flames quickly spread through the area. The fire started in the nearby village of Malia and, pushed by strong winds and high temperatures, it grew out of control, burning over 100 square kilometers. More than 250 firefighters tried to stop the fire, but it was too strong. Ben and Lucy, who have lived in Cyprus for about four years, lost everything they owned.

Ben described the terrifying moment when they realized they had to leave. There was no warning, no sirens, and no fire service present at first. The family had no electricity or water, and they had to search for their belongings in the dark using small lights. Ben told his son Ethan to pick a few favorite toys to take with them. Even though Ethan is usually not very cooperative, he listened this time because he could sense the fear in his parents' voices. The family quickly gathered their three dogs and a few bags before escaping. Ben tried to warn as many neighbors as possible before leaving.

When they returned the next morning, their house was almost completely destroyed. Only the walls were left, and some rooms were still burning. All their memories, including Lucy's wedding dress, wedding jewelry, and the rope from their wedding ceremony, were lost. Lucy also lost all the supplies for her children's entertainment business, meaning she has to start over. In Souni alone, 93 homes were destroyed by the fire. Ben said the trauma from the fire will always stay with him, especially because their home was where Ethan took his first steps and learned to ride a bike. Now, the family is living with Lucy's parents in Ypsonas, Limassol, and trying to stay positive for Ethan, who is sick from smoke inhalation.

The Armstrongs are waiting for help from the government and their insurance company. Ben's brother has started a fundraising page to help them rebuild their lives. The community has shown a lot of support, with many people donating and offering help. Ben said he is very grateful for the kindness of others, even though he never expected to be in this situation. He believes that the strength of the local villages and communities comes from people looking after each other. The family is taking things one day at a time, hoping for better days ahead.
