He later worked in graphic design and then studied animation at the Royal College of Art in London. John teamed up with his friend Tara Lawall, who helped him write the story. The character of Ray is voiced by Domhnall Gleeson, a well-known actor from the Harry Potter and Star Wars movies. John reached out to Domhnall after hearing him say he wanted to try something lighter and more fun. Domhnall's performance brought Ray to life and helped the film reach a wider audience.

The production of 'Retirement Plan' moved quickly, taking about nine months from start to finish, with four months dedicated to animation. This is much faster than most animated films, which often require larger teams and more time. John and his team chose a simple and grounded visual style, focusing on small, quiet moments rather than flashy animation. For example, there is a scene where Ray stands silently at a friend's funeral, showing his feelings without any dramatic movements. The film also features real locations in Dublin, such as the Forty Foot, to give it an authentic Irish feel. John considered setting the story in the United States but realized it made more sense to keep it in Dublin, where he could include details that Irish viewers would recognize.

Since its premiere in Galway, 'Retirement Plan' has been shown at over 70 film festivals and has won several awards, including the Grand Jury Award and Audience Award for Animated Short at SXSW, Best of the Festival at Palm Springs Shortfest, and Best Animated Short at the Bali International Film Festival. The film's success has been a surreal experience for John, who enjoys sharing Ray's journey with audiences around the world. He even creates playful postcards and social media posts pretending to send Ray to different festivals. While Ray himself might not be thrilled with all the attention, his story has touched many people by showing how dreams and reality can mix in unexpected ways. Ray only wanted to retire, but now he might become an Oscar winner.
