A second data centre is going to be built in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, as part of a plan to make the region a major technology hub. The company DataVita already has a data centre in Airdrie, and now they want to expand by building another one nearby. Data centres are important because they store and process huge amounts of information for the internet, businesses, and artificial intelligence. The Scottish government has announced new rules for these centres. If a new data centre will use more than 50 megawatts of power, the local planning authorities must tell the Scottish ministers about the application within seven days. This is because data centres use a lot of energy and water, and some people living near them are worried about noise, construction, and the impact on their communities.
Earlier this year, plans were revealed to make North Lanarkshire one of the most advanced places in the world for artificial intelligence. The UK government said this could bring over eight billion pounds in private investment to the area, along with a new community fund worth about 543 million pounds over 15 years. DataVita has now announced a further 300 million pounds of development, and Dell Technologies will move their Scottish team to the Lanarkshire AI Innovation Park. The people behind these projects say they will support more than 3,400 jobs, including both temporary construction jobs and permanent positions in technology. They also plan to offer training and skills programs to help local people get jobs in the tech industry.
Danny Quinn, the managing director at DataVita, said that just a few years ago, this kind of investment in Scotland's data centre infrastructure would have been hard to imagine. He said that artificial intelligence is having a big impact and that Scotland has everything it needs to become a leader in AI. However, some people are concerned about the effects of these centres on their communities. Hannah Mary Goodlad, a government minister, said there needs to be a balance between the economic benefits of data centres and their impact on local people. She explained that the new rules are meant to help monitor big projects and make sure they fit with the area's infrastructure. The new regulations will not affect DataVita's current Airdrie site, which uses less than 50 megawatts of power, but they could affect future projects. The Scottish government says it will keep working with DataVita and other partners to make sure the investment brings jobs and opportunities to the region, while also protecting local communities.
