Ai, a remarkable female chimpanzee who lived in Japan, has passed away at the age of 49. She was well-known for her intelligence and creativity, especially her ability to count numbers and create paintings. Ai was born in western Africa and moved to Japan in 1977, where she became the focus of a major research project at Kyoto University’s Center for the Evolutionary Origins of Human Behavior. This project, called the Ai Project, aimed to study the minds of chimpanzees and learn more about how they think and solve problems.
When Ai was just 18 months old, researchers gave her a special keyboard connected to a computer. This allowed them to test her memory and learning skills. By the age of five, Ai had already mastered naming numbers from one to six. She could also identify the color and object of 300 different samples, which was a significant achievement for a chimpanzee. These findings were published in a scientific paper in 1985 by Tetsuro Matsuzawa, the primatologist who led the Ai Project.
Ai was not only intelligent but also very creative. She enjoyed drawing and painting, often using marker pens to make art on blank paper. Unlike some animals who need food rewards to participate in activities, Ai drew simply because she liked it. Her creativity was so impressive that in 2017, a scarf made from one of her paintings was given to the famous primatologist Jane Goodall. Ai also showed her cleverness in other ways. For example, she once used a key to unlock her cage and escaped with another chimpanzee, showing her problem-solving skills.
In 2000, Ai gave birth to a son named Ayumu, who is also known for his excellent memory and intelligence. Ai’s life was filled with learning, creativity, and important contributions to science. She helped researchers understand more about the minds of chimpanzees and how similar they can be to humans in some ways. When Ai died of old age and organ failure on January 9, she was surrounded by the staff who had cared for her for many years. Her legacy will live on through the research she inspired and the art she created, reminding people of the intelligence and creativity that animals can possess.
